Website updates! Changes!

gleix.net is changing!

Been awhile since I’ve gotten things in order around here. The website is showing its age - and while I initially had been looking into a fully new website which would mean archiving this one, for the time being I’ve decided on upkeep and big changes here given the existing structure (and headaches of a major migration).

I noted some changes in the last update blog post which included:

In addition I’ve been doing lots of general upkeep. Boring stuff like some SEO stuff and minor tweaks to individual pages across the board, but also some big stuff:

  • The Visual Art page is now filled with gifs of all sorts of work from the past decade, including a ton of never shown or private personal & client works.

  • I’ve fully redone the home page and optimized it for both desktop & mobile. Mobile is pretty straightforward, and desktop has a nifty lil’ spotlight feature.

  • A brand new resources page has been added to navigation, listing things like cool NYC spots & groups for all sorts of creative stuff, online educational resources, affiliates/collaborators, and some online communities to check out. Info needed, but links are all there!

  • Experimenting with putting a music player on the sidebar (desktop only) that will play a random album from Gleix or Broken Alias’ Bandcamp!

  • I never turned comments on for this blog! I think I’ll do that moving forward - though I don’t think I’ll go back through the full backlog. At least not right now.

  • Those who follow my work surely picked up on the fact that my old logo has essentially vanished across the board. Initially this was part of a rebranding, though now it’s just a bit of a full de-branding until I figure out what I wanna do. The old one was originally designed specifically for the Anxiety Dreams album and somehow turned into my logo for everything over time.

  • Tryin’ out a darker theme.

There are some major revamps I’d like to work on, and some updates I need to make to include new work from the past few years that never made it up here, including some larger jobs like my work for Keinemusik @ The Brooklyn Mirage and at Zamna Festival in Tulum among other things.

May have some other fun updates to come in the near future.

This website acts as a massive historical portfolio for a lot of my professional creative endeavors, which at this stage means it’s problematically vast and unfocused. This is something I’ll hopefully move toward tackling after some of the more general stuff is sorted out. Lots of slow tweaks and additions. Expect little things to break here and there while this place is under construction for the foreseeable future!

Currency Audio × Gleix - Chaos Reflector [Live A/V Performance]

A performance by percussionist Currency Audio (Rajeev Maddela) with visual accompaniment by Gleix (George Gleixner).

This fully improvised first-time collaborative performance, utilizing a MIDI drum kit and custom controllable generative software pipelines developed independently by both artists, merges the two in a complex web of real-time data sonification and visualization via software like Ableton Live, Cycling '74 Max/MSP, and Derivative TouchDesigner.

The theme for this event, provided to the artists, was to do with Richard Brautigan's "All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace" (1967).

Performed in Brooklyn, NY in May of 2024.

Interactive A/V Installation @ Phase Space NYC (5/6/2023)

Event link

I’ll have a some interactive pieces in place at this event coming up at Phase Space NYC.

‘Out of Phase’ is the last audiovisual show happening before the space transitions into something new as Andrei and Paloma depart for new adventures.

Expect CRT scopes and interactive projections to play with, alongside the multitude of talent on the poster.

I haven’t kept up with updates the past month or so due to a busy schedule, but have kept up the creative output amidst the client work. Still continuously working through a backlog of projects, music, and hope to find the time to share some of the recent events and visual projects I’ve been lucky enough to take part in.

I don’t know if anybody reads these things, but I hope you’re doing well!

Broken Alias performance at STILLSUITE A/V Showcase in Brooklyn

Brief recap shots from a performance at STILLSUITE, an A/V showcase held at Millennium Film Workshop in Brooklyn.

I was asked to perform as part of the showcase and opted to focus on music this time around, and to give my chiptune focused project Broken Alias some attention, with Erin Wajufos (of Never Knows Better) providing some stellar accompanying visual projections. This 1 hour set was a sort of 'mobile music showcase' for me, utilizing unreleased material from 3 upcoming albums which were written and performed using LSDJ on the Nintendo Gameboy, the Dirtywave M8 portable tracker, and Caustic 3 - a DAW for mobile. I also decided to lug six of my CRT Scopes across town to display the music's waveforms (and, subsequently, think a lot about that exhausting choice).

Thanks so much to Erin and Anto who curated the showcase for having me, Erin for the custom live visuals, Dolphin Uppercut who shot and cut together this video (during the event!), and all those who had kind words or just stuck around 🕹🎵 Be sure to check out all the other talent that was a part of this fantastic live A/V showcase, as well as the host of the event, Millennium Film Workshop in Brooklyn!

Music video release // KAIXI × iku - fizzBuzz()

Just released is the music video I did for fizzBuzz(), a collab between kaixi & iku~

This started as part of the visuals for one of iku’s sets in 2020, and grew into a properly sequenced MV spanning the full song that was *mostly* completed at the beginning of last year, but revisited and wrapped over the past month.

You can check this fun track out, and my accompanying video of strobes & spikey low-poly geometry on Youtube, and in a blog post @ the top of gleix.net

Thanks Kaixi & Cy for involving me in this project, and congrats on the release!

Check the song out on Spotify here!

Live Visuals section updated with some recaps, general update

Put up some photos from live visuals I ran visuals for @ Avant Gardner / The Brooklyn Mirage in 2021 over in the live visuals section. Only photos for now, but I hope to get some video highlights cut together sometime soon. Just a bit of a lengthy process.

Other things I’ve got going on in no particular order -

Alongside some upcoming live events. A lot going on, hoping to properly document & wrap some of this stuff up here soon. Hope everybody’s well!

Touchdesigner .tox component for RGB analog-esque video feedback à la WAAAVE_POOL

Never did share this, so I thought I’d link it here. Awhile back somebody on the Touchdesigner subreddit asked how they might go about recreating the sort of effects made by analog video feedback loops, or devices such as Andrei Jay’s WAAAVE_POOL.

I started writing out a response, but because the basic setup is quick to make in Touchdesigner I ended up building a little component, adding some easy-to-control custom parameters, and sharing it to the subreddit.

You can download the .tox file here.

Video: Gleix Live @ NKB x Ars Electronica NYC // "60Hz" (Live AV performance)

Performed live on September 9th, 2021 at Culture Lab LIC in NYC as part of a showcase put together by Never Knows Better at the Ars Electronica Festival Garden.

This performance utilizes a fully DIY modular audiovisual synthesizer, a collection of custom controllable systems built in Touchdesigner, and a CRT TV which has been modified into an pseudo-oscilloscope receiving dedicated audio & video feeds to generate colored waveforms.

Three 60Hz tones are generated by the AV modular representing the three RGB color channels, panned left, center, and right respectively. These three underlying tones, which the piece is fully built around, have harmonics which shift depending on the shape of the individual color channels in the image, with peaks of amplitude being built for each color's pixels as the image is scanned through on each refresh of the video signal. Additional waveform generators and simple oscillators are injected into the color channels and 'played' in tune with the underlying tones by dialing in exact frequencies, which at multiples of 60Hz, will also form stable scanlines in the receiving color channel.

Touchdesigner serves as a complex collection of controllable systems for handling & manipulating audio, video input, as a standalone visual system, to introduce generative elements and contained-randomness when triggering external audio elements and visual subsystems, and for general data & MIDI processing. Percussive elements, rhodes, and additional audio processing in FL Studio.
